During the summer months, as weather permits, East Coast Black Belt Academy holds beach training at the west end of Smith Point Beach in Shirley. These workouts are predominantly for adult students, but once every summer there is a full dojo workout for all students and their families. This usually takes place in August and is a great family fun day. 2023 marks our 33rd annual Family Beach Workout.
Training on the beach offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their skills in an environment distinctly different from the traditional dojo setting. Not only is it an enjoyable experience, but it also allows students to practice under less-than-ideal conditions, thereby testing their balance, focus, and adaptability.
The beach training sessions also provide a refreshing change of scenery, enabling students to explore new challenges and push their limits. The sandy terrain, uneven surfaces, and unpredictable waves demand heightened concentration and physical control. By facing these obstacles, students develop a stronger sense of balance and stability, and hone their ability to maintain composure in any situation. Learning to adapt to these challenges not only enhances a student’s martial arts skills but also cultivates a mindset of flexibility and resilience that can be applied to other areas of life.
Beyond the physical benefits, beach training instills a sense of camaraderie among students. The shared experience creates a bond that extends beyond the training sessions, fostering teamwork and mutual support.
Students should wear bathing suits underneath their uniforms. Children must be accompanied by parents for the entire workout. We do not provide transportation, so parents and/or family members are responsible for transporting students who cannot drive themselves.
